OpenAI appoints Tom Duff Gordon to lead EMEA policy

OpenAI has appointed Tom Duff Gordon as Vice President and Head of EMEA Policy, strengthening its policy leadership across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, as reported by multiple sources.

Gordon announced the move through a LinkedIn post, calling it a “new chapter” in his career as the artificial intelligence sector faces growing scrutiny from governments and regulators worldwide.

AI governance

In his new role, Gordon will lead policy efforts across the EMEA region at a time when countries are rapidly developing frameworks around AI governance, safety, innovation and regulation.

His appointment comes as policymakers across Europe and other regions intensify discussions around responsible AI deployment, transparency and economic impact.

Gordon stated, “AI is a general purpose technology that will radically reshape economies, markets, and societies. The transformation will be profound, and is coming soon.”

He added, “Policy must keep pace with accelerating technology change. I’m excited to work with policymakers on ways to ensure that abundant intelligence is shared broadly and safely, driving economic growth and opportunity for everyone. We must be clear-eyed about the risks, whilst preparing to capture the tremendous upside across science, healthcare, education, the world of work, and more.”

Growing focus

Gordon stressed that AI will significantly influence economies, markets and societies over the coming years. He also highlighted the need for policy development to move at the same pace as technological progress.

The appointment underlines OpenAI’s increasing focus on engaging with regulators and governments as AI adoption accelerates globally.
