Kuwait launches national wage payment system for private-sector employees

The Central Bank of Kuwait (CBK) has launched the Kuwait Wage Payment System (KWPS), a national platform designed to process and monitor wage transfers for private-sector employees through local banks.

The system is part of the second phase of the Kuwait National Payment System (KNPS2), which is managed and operated by the CBK. The initiative is aimed at strengthening Kuwait’s payment infrastructure, supporting digital transformation and improving the efficiency of the banking sector.

KWPS will enable private-sector wages to be disbursed electronically through local banks, with the CBK responsible for the system’s technical and operational management. The Public Authority for Manpower will oversee employers’ compliance with wage payment requirements under the system.

The platform uses international standards for electronic data exchange between financial institutions, including ISO 20022.

According to the CBK, this is intended to improve the transparency, efficiency and speed of wage payments while enabling electronic tracking of transactions.

The system will also reduce manual processes, improve the quality of wage data and facilitate information sharing between relevant authorities. Supervisory bodies will be able to monitor wage disbursements in real time and identify potential non-compliance at an earlier stage.

The CBK said the system will provide more accurate data to support decision-making and labour-market policy development.

It is also expected to encourage financial inclusion by promoting the use of banking services and electronic payment methods.

KWPS is the third system introduced under the second phase of Kuwait’s national payments project. The Kuwait Automated Clearing House (KACH) was launched in January 2026, followed by the Kuwait Dispute Management System (KDMS) in February.

The CBK said KWPS represents a further step in developing Kuwait’s national financial infrastructure and building a payments framework aligned with international standards and practices.
