Qatar sets compensation rules for employees working on weekly rest days

Workers in Qatar who are required to work on their weekly rest day are entitled to either a substitute day off or additional pay under Article 75 of the country’s labour law.

Under the provision, employers must compensate employees who work on their designated weekly rest day through one of two options: granting a replacement day off or providing financial compensation.

Employees who opt for additional pay must receive at least 150% of their normal daily wage for the rest day worked, according to the rules outlined in the report.

Alternatively, workers who receive a substitute day off are entitled to their regular pay for the day they worked, without any deduction.

The provisions establish compensation requirements for employers when employees are asked to work on their weekly rest day, ensuring they receive either replacement time off or additional wages.

Understanding these entitlements is particularly relevant for workers in sectors such as construction and hospitality, where work schedules may include shifts on designated rest days.

Workers who believe their employer has not complied with the provisions can contact Qatar’s Ministry of Labour to seek clarification or file a complaint.
