The future of work lies at the intersection of AI and green expertise, and professionals capable of leveraging AI to bolster cybersecurity defenses will be in high demand.

Technology and sustainability are reshaping industries, so it is critical to understand the skills that will define the labour market.

World Economic Forum (WEF) reports, including the Global Cybersecurity Outlook 2025 and the Future of Jobs Report 2025, illustrate how artificial intelligence and green skills are poised to dominate the employment landscape.

Artificial intelligence is revolutionising cybersecurity, a trend highlighted in the WEF's Global Cybersecurity Outlook 2025 report. Sixty-six percent of organisations expect AI to have the biggest impact on their cybersecurity practices next year. Despite this, only 37 percent have established processes to assess the security of AI tools before implementation. This gap shows the urgency of professionals equipped to marry innovation with security.

Implementing AI will demand specialised skills. The development of secure AI systems will be crucial, as will expertise in identifying and mitigating risks related to AI tools. Professionals capable of leveraging AI to bolster cybersecurity defenses will be in high demand. This intersection of AI and cybersecurity reflects the need for a workforce that combines technical acumen with the ability to navigate complex risk environments.

The Rise of Green Skills

Although green skills are not explicitly the focus of the WEF reports, their integration with technological advancements is undeniable. As organisations adopt cutting-edge technologies such as AI, their environmental impact becomes a critical consideration. This convergence needs a new set of competencies aimed at sustainability.

Green skills in technology include practices that reduce the carbon footprint of AI and cybersecurity operations. Professionals will need to integrate sustainability into their technical strategies, ensuring both environmental responsibility and operational resilience. For instance, designing cybersecurity systems with environmental sustainability in mind, or adhering to regulatory frameworks that promote green practices, will become essential. By aligning green expertise with technological innovation, businesses can create a competitive edge while contributing to broader sustainability goals.

Navigating the Skills Landscape of 2025

The Future of Jobs Report 2025 emphasises a shift toward skills that merge technical proficiency with socio-emotional intelligence. Analytical thinking remains the most sought-after foundational skill. However, the rapid rise of AI and big data highlights a growing demand for advanced technological capabilities. Networking, cybersecurity, and technology literacy are also experiencing significant growth, signaling their centrality to the future workforce.

Equally important are socio-emotional skills, which are increasingly recognised as crucial for adapting to a rapidly changing environment. Creative thinking is gaining traction, particularly in industries like insurance and telecommunications. Resilience, flexibility, and curiosity are emphasised as key attributes for navigating uncertainty and driving lifelong learning. Professionals who combine these adaptive skills with technological expertise will be better positioned to meet the challenges of the future workplace.

Industries that prioritise skill convergence, particularly in AI and green technologies, are expected to lead in innovation. For example, green technologies—such as renewable energy systems and energy-efficient infrastructure—rely on professionals who possess both environmental expertise and technical know-how. Similarly, AI-driven solutions in environmental management, such as resource optimisation and ecological monitoring, are opening new career pathways. Cybersecurity is another field where sustainability and innovation intersect, as organisations seek to ensure the security of green technologies while minimising environmental impact.

The rapid growth of technologies, including robots, autonomous systems, and energy generation and distribution, is reshaping job markets. As a result, the workforce must embrace continuous learning and adaptability. Employers and employees alike must focus on building skills that are not only in demand today but also resilient to future technological disruptions.

5 Key Takeaways

  • AI is reshaping industries, especially cybersecurity. Professionals skilled in secure AI implementation and risk management will be in high demand.
  • Green skills are becoming integral to technology roles. Integrating sustainability into AI and cybersecurity strategies is critical for minimising environmental impact.
  • The future workforce requires a blend of technical and socio-emotional skills. Creative thinking, resilience, and lifelong learning are as essential as AI expertise and technological literacy.
  • Industries at the forefront of innovation rely on skill convergence. Green technologies, AI-driven environmental solutions, and sustainable cybersecurity practices are creating new opportunities.
  • Continuous learning is vital for staying relevant. Professionals must remain adaptable and proactive in developing emerging skill sets to navigate the evolving job market.
